Tommy Lee took a break from drumming for Motley Crue in 1999 to corral a star-studded album in Methods of Mayhem’s first offering. The band then called it quits in 2000 and now, over 10 years later, Lee has regrouped with a new set of musicians and invited the world to join in his Mayhem. Chartattack.com reports that the band’s upcoming album, A Public Disservice Announcement, “was recoded in a rather unorthodox manner. Lee and producer Scott Humphrey (Rob Zombie, Andrew W.K.) and a team of other people uploaded parts of each song onto ThePublicRecord.com for people to download and add their own parts and submit them for possible inclusion on the record. Lee listened to every part and picked his favourites, and each player will get credit on the album.”

“This really was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had making a record, other than the first time I made a record — because there’s nothing quite like popping your cherry!” Lee said, according to Blabbermouth.net. “This record was the craziest thing ever.

Parts were sent in from all over the world by people wanting to participate in the first once-in-a-lifetime global collaboration. It was insane, dude!”

Methods of Mayhem’s first single “Time Bomb” was just digitally released last week and can be found on iTunes. A Public Disservice Announcement is set for a September 21st release and can be pre-ordered at a special discount with some bonus extras at this location. [Source]

Tommy Lee dropped in to EW Towers this morning to talk about his new Methods of Mayhem CD, A Public Disservice Announcement (of which, more in due course). But we couldn’t let the Mötley Crüe skinsman leave without asking whether he had an opinion about the possibility of his fellow rocker Steven Tyler becoming a judge on American Idol. Turns out, he did.

“I know him really well, and he’ll f—ing kill it,” said Lee, who was himself a judge on the 2006 reality show Rock Star: Supernova. “Look, you’re judging karaoke—you don’t need to be a really super experienced judge for that. But it’s nice to have an actual musician in there. He’s fun, and he’ll keep the show exciting too. He’s a good guy for that, I think.”

One possible problem? Tyler would find it hard to criticize anyone who fell off the Idol stage, given his own recent habit of doing exactly that.

“He just fell off the stage,” laughed Lee. “I was watching the news. I was like, is that from the other time, or is this a new one?” [Source]

MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee backed Chris “Ludacris” Bridges during the rapper’s performance at the BET Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 27.

Ludacris and DJ Khaled closed the show with a high-energy performance of “My Chick Bad” followed by beats from an asylum-straight-jacket-bound Nicki Minaj. Bringing a rock-fueled edge to the final song of the night with Rick Ross, Busta Rhymes, T-Pain and Diddy on “All I Do Is Win” was Lee backed by a drumline.

Video footage of the performance can be viewed below.

Lee and Ludacris arguably became reality television’s oddest couple when they participated together in Discovery Network‘s Planet Green popular “Battleground Earth” eco-centric series. [Source]

The cover artwork for “A Public Disservice Announcement”, the new album from MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee‘s METHODS OF MAYHEM project, can be viewed below. Due on September 21 via Loud & Proud Records, a Roadrunner Records imprint focusing on established artists, the CD features Tommy Lee collaborating with the world. Lee commented, “When I founded METHODS in 1999, the whole purpose of the band was to be all over the place. In keeping with that, this METHODS isn’t anything like the last one. There’s no hip hop and there’s no roster of guest stars. This time, it’s me, my band, and the world.”

“A Public Disservice Announcement” track listing:

01. Drunk Uncle Pete
02. Time Bomb
03. Louder
04. Fight Song
05. Blame
06. Two Ways
07. Talk Me Off The Ledge
08. Only One
09. All I Wanna Do
10. Back To Before
11. Party Instructions

Tommy Lee and his team, including producer Scott Humphrey, singer-guitarist J3 and others, wrote and recorded the songs for the new album, then made the core components of each available for download on www.thepublicrecord.com to anyone who wished to add their playing or otherwise re-interpret the music however they saw fit. Lee listened to every single submission that was uploaded, chose the best, and integrated the actual audio tracks into the album’s final cuts. Every single musician whose part was used is credited and thanked on the album.

The song files were made available on The Public Record web site on October 5, 2009. By the end of the submission period in February, 2010, the page was viewed over 1 million times and over 10,000 submissions were uploaded. What came back once the public got its hands on the raw ingredients was truly all over the map — just as Tommy Lee had hoped. The diverse submissions included techno tracks sent in from Japan, hand drum rhythms from India and searing guitar solos from as close to home as San Diego.

METHODS OF MAYHEM self-titled debut was released in 1999 and was certified gold by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for sales in excess of 500,000 copies in the United States alone. The album featured Snoop Dogg, Kid Rock and Fred Durst, among others. METHODS OF MAYHEM‘s set was a featured highlight of 2000′s Ozzfest. [Source]
