September 23rd, 2008: Motley Crue Set to Rock Lion City

MOTLEY Crue will be performing in Singapore this October. LIN MEI ZHEN looks at the band’s colourful career. The 80s gave us everything – from badly-colour coordinated clothes, Cold War scares, rise of Molly Ringwald-led teen films and colourful flamboyant rock like we’ve never seen since. One of that era’s biggest acts, Motley Crue, will be in Singapore on Oct 16, performing at the outdoors Fort Canning Park. Motley Crue was massive in the 80s thanks to a string of big rock anthems such as Dr Feelgood, Home Sweet Home, Girls, Girls, Girls and Kickstart My Heart. In many ways, the group’s long roster of songs have helped to form the blueprint of what hard rock sounds like today. The group’s profile dipped in the 90s due to changing music taste, but the band carried on releasing albums every few years. In the past few years, Motley Crue has been experiencing a resurgence in interest starting with a very successful tour in 2005 to back up its double-disc greatest hits release, Red, White & Crue. Following that, the group has managed to elevate itself into one of the undisputed legends in rock.

September 03rd, 2008: Rock and Hip Hop join up in “Battleground Earth”

First it was a vague futuristic concept, and then it was “An Inconvenient Truth,” now it has become a movement and an all out battle for our planet’s survival. The hard living, diesel blowing tour bus lives of rock and hip hop stars doesn’t exactly seem like green living, but that’s exactly the reason for the challenge as Ludacris and Tommy Lee push themselves to the limit to make their tours green and reduce their carbon footprints. The 10 episode series follows Cris “Ludacris” Bridges and Tommy Lee as they face weekly challenges. Enlisting the help of their posses, aka “ecorages,” Ludacris taps Willie Box, Sesean Bridges, and Tony “4-IZE” Hayes III while Tommy Lee relies on Diggity Dave, Johnny Colt, and Nina Bergman to help him get to the finish line. With episodes filmed from coast to coast, including the premiere episode filmed in Atlanta, the two high energy music icons garner help from a variety of guest stars that include Jane Fonda, Sean Combs, Pamela Anderson, Gene Simmons, and anyone else willing to lend a hand. I had the opportunity to sit down with a 4IZE from Ludacris’ crew and Johnny Colt of Rockstar Supernova and Train for a Q&A about the show, its impact on their lives and their hopes for the planet itself.

September 03rd, 2008: Review: Appreciative 15,000 embrace Cruefest’s Montage invasion

Inaugural tour of hard-edged music highlighted by songs from reunited Motley Crue. The Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain was overrun by tattoos, smoke machines and plenty of hard-edged music as the inaugural Cruefest made its next-to-last stop on Saturday. All four original members of Motley Crue, touring in support of their first album together in 11 years, headlined the six-hour show. Also appearing were Trapt, Papa Roach, Buckcherry and Crue bassist Nikki Sixx’s side project SIXX: A.M.Trapt, a hard rock/alternative rock band out of Los Gatos, Calif., opened the show. It was followed by SIXX: A.M., the side project that got together to record the soundtrack to Sixx’s autobiography, “The Heroin Diaries.” The group, consisting of Sixx on bass and backing vocals, vocalist James Michael, guitarist DJ Ashba and drummer Joshua Stevens, closed their portion of the show with a sing-along version of their hit “Life Is Beautiful.”Papa Roach, a metal/hard rock band from Vacaville, Calif., then played a nine-song, fifty-minute set. Vocalist Jacoby Shaddix led the group through some of its most popular tunes and some new songs from its “Metamorphosis” album, to be released in February 2009. Buckcherry, another hard rock/metal band from Los Angeles whose name was inspired by Chuck Berry and whose music was modeled after AC/DC, stormed through eight numbers. Highlights of its set included the first single from its new album “Black Butterfly,” “Too Drunk” and a 10-minute version of its hit “Crazy B**ch,” which contained elements of Billy Squier’s “The Stroke” and Prince’s “Sexy M.F.”

September 03rd, 2008: Loud and raunchy Crue Fest wraps up season

Writing about a Motley Crue concert has never really been easy. There’s a lot of self-editing involved. What makes it harder this year is the inclusion of four other bands that are just as loud, vulgar and raunchy.Advertisement Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been a Motley Crue fan since their debut in 1982. I know what to expect, having seen them perform numerous times over the years. But there was something about Friday night at Saratoga Performing Arts Center that just didn’t sit right with me.Sure, there was the standard copious, gratuitous porn interspersed with loud guitars and pyrotechnics, but something was missing. The festivities began early with short sets by Trapt (of “Headstong” fame) and Sixx:A.M., which is Crue bassist’s Nikki Sixx’s special project that chronicles his rise to fame and subsequent battle with drug use.By 6:30 p.m., with the skies threatening, Papa Roach claimed the stage. It was, by far, the best band of the night. The group burst onto the music scene in 2000 with its highly successful debut, “Infest,” and fans have followed along ever since.Fronted by vocalist Jacoby Shaddix, Papa Roach seriously rocked SPAC with a set that featured a mix of new and old, including “Getting Away With Murder,” “Time is Running Out,” “Forever,” “Lifeline,” “Scars” and “Broken Home.”
